This major covers energy conversion and computational engineering. Students learn to design and analyse power plant processes across wind, solar, hydrogen and nuclear energy systems, develop waste and biomass conversion systems, and design energy storage systems. Aalto University says the major builds understanding of modern and future energy systems.
The degree is 120 ECTS credits and takes 2 years. It includes major studies, a master’s thesis and electives. The first year covers required courses in the Advanced Energy Solution’s Master’s programme and this major, with topics including sustainable fuels, fluid and gas dynamics, energy conversion, simulation and modelling. The second year is more self-directed, with course choices grouped by theme: conversion and storage, methods, or systems and technologies. Students may also take electives from Aalto or other universities, a minor or practical training.
The major is designed for students who want to develop into energy experts. Aalto University says it gives a strong foundation for doctoral studies.
