Aalto University’s Master of Arts in Film Directing is part of the Master’s Programme in Film and Television at Elo Film School Finland. The programme concentrates on scripted fiction formats in audiovisual production. Students study cinematic idea development, story building and narration, and they develop their own cinematic style and directorial identity.
The degree is 120 ECTS credits and takes two years. It is taught in English through contact teaching. The studies are organised in four 30 ECTS parts: joint compulsory content for all majors in film, advanced studies for Film Directing, elective studies, and a written Master’s Thesis. The advanced studies include theory, individual research and practical workshops, work with actors, writing original material, and laboratories carried out with one or more majors within ELO. The programme also includes study options in other film fields, a possible internship, short exchange periods abroad, international projects, and participation in international film festivals with an ELO-funded short film if selected.
The programme prepares students to specialise in feature film or TV drama. Aalto University says graduates can direct fiction feature-length films and scripted TV series.
