Film Editing, Master of Arts (Art and Design)

Film Editing is a major in Aalto University’s Master’s Programme in Film and Television. The programme continues bachelor’s studies in film editing and focuses on mastering the structure and expression of feature-length documentary and fiction film. Students also study digital post-production, animation and experimental film. The major aims to develop students into experts in viewing and seeing, storytellers and artists.

Teaching takes place through workshops, lecture modules built around changing themes, and advanced studies in the theory of film editing. Practice productions focus on fiction, documentary and animation. The programme is based mainly on practical learning by doing, individual work and direction and dialogue-based interaction. Students draw up a personal study plan and may specialise further through tailored minor modules.

Aalto University says the major is suitable for students who want to deepen their skills and vision in dramaturgy and film editing and continue to further studies. International exchange programmes, internships, visiting teachers, film festivals, seminars and workshops are part of the education.
