Film Sound Design, Master of Arts (Art and Design)

Film Sound Design is a Master of Arts (Art and Design) major at Aalto University. It prepares students for sound design work in film and television productions. The studies cover film theory and history, the role of sound in the cinematic experience, and film sound design themes such as sound effects recording, audio dramas and music as a narrative device in film.

The major is organised as 60 credits of advanced studies, 30 credits of elective studies and a 30-credit thesis. The programme also includes 30 credits of compulsory joint courses. Teaching is mainly practical and based on learning by doing, small-group work, peer learning, individual guidance and conversational interaction. Practice productions include sound design and recording procedures.

Aalto University says the degree provides a foundation for doctoral study. The page also says students can shape their studies through elective courses, practice work and studies at other higher education institutions.
