Aalto University’s Game Design and Development major is a two-year Master of Science (Technology) programme in information and communication technologies. It covers game design, game development, level design, game balancing, games user research, industry trends and game design psychology. Optional study can extend into 3D animation, interactive storytelling, human-computer interaction, machine learning and AI.
The programme is taught in English through contact teaching. It has 120 ECTS credits and is organised as major studies, a possible minor, elective studies and a master’s thesis. Students work on group projects and on the Game Project I & II courses, where they pitch, design, develop and publish games. The teaching includes excursions to game companies, industry and peer feedback, thesis advisors from industry, and visits to international game industry events in Finland and abroad.
Aalto University says the major is multidisciplinary and allows a personalised study plan. It also says the programme cooperates closely with top Finnish video game companies and prepares students for the Nordic game industry. The degree gives eligibility to apply for doctoral studies.
