The Master’s Programme in Geoengineering covers geotechnical engineering, rock engineering, and road engineering. It also includes study in foundation design, soil mechanics, ground improvement, rock mechanics, rock excavation, and the design of roads and transport routes.
The programme is two years and 120 ECTS credits. It is organised into major studies, a master’s thesis, and elective studies. The major studies include compulsory first-year common studies and elective advanced studies. The master’s thesis is an applied research project and may be done with an industrial partner or in a research project. Students may choose to specialise in Geotechnical Engineering, Highway Engineering, or Rock Engineering. Study methods include flipped classroom teaching, experiments in laboratory facilities, field investigations, projects for industry, site visits, and work in tunnels under the campus or through virtual reality.
Aalto University says the programme prepares graduates for work as leading designers in infrastructure, tunnelling, and urban development projects in Finland and around the world. It also qualifies graduates for doctoral studies.
