Aalto University’s Mechanical and Civil Engineering major combines classical engineering fundamentals with computational simulation and programming. Students study mathematics, engineering principles and computing, including integral and differential calculus, linear algebra, statistical analysis, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, mechanics of materials, programming principles and algorithms, numerical methods and the finite element method.
The programme is a 3+2 year path with contact teaching and on-campus attendance. The bachelor’s degree includes basic studies, the major, a minor and elective studies. Students work on team projects, use engineering software, take practical programming courses and complete a bachelor’s thesis. Elective studies can include up to 10 ECTS from a relevant summer job or internship, and students may spend a semester abroad or take a summer course at an Aalto partner university.
Aalto University says the major is tailored for students who want to continue to master’s studies at Aalto School of Engineering. After the bachelor’s degree, students have the automatic right to continue to selected master’s programmes at Aalto University.
