About this program

Photography at Aalto University is a Master of Arts (Art and Design) programme that treats photography as a practice in motion. The studies cover professional, artistic and research-based work. Students study photography as a material and social practice, and the programme addresses the contexts in which images are made, circulated and displayed.

The two-year programme is 120 ECTS credits and is taught in English through contact teaching. It includes workshops, lectures, seminars, independent projects and personal supervision. Students may also supplement their major studies with courses from other majors and programmes at Aalto University, or with social science, humanities or technical studies at other universities.

The programme supports specialisation in documentary photography, contemporary art, and academic and artistic research. Aalto University also supports international student exchange, international residency programmes and workshops, and presentation of portfolios to professionals in the field.
