About this program

Aalto University’s Software Engineering major is part of the Master’s Programme in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences. It teaches core technical software engineering skills and goes beyond programming to cover the design and management of large-scale software systems and digital products.

The degree totals 120 ECTS credits over two years. The structure includes major subject studies, possible minor studies, elective studies, and a 30 ECTS master’s thesis. The major can be taken as a long 60 ECTS major or a compact 40 ECTS major. Teaching is project-based and combines core theory, lectures, seminars, scientific articles, essays, and tailored exercises. Students also complete a large software project and may work with companies or public sector organisations, including in thesis research.

The major is designed for students who want either deeper specialisation in software engineering or a broader foundation for industry roles. Aalto University says the skills also provide a basis for doctoral studies.
