Water and Environmental Engineering, Master of Science (Technology)

The Water and Environmental Engineering Master’s Programme covers climate change impacts on water bodies, sustainable management of water resources, and the recovery of nutrients from wastewater. Aalto University says the programme gives a broad understanding of water-related issues and the ability to develop solutions to them.

The programme is 120 ECTS credits and planned to take 2 years. Students complete major studies, elective studies and a master’s thesis. Aalto says students can finish their common and advanced studies during the first year, then use the second year for elective courses and the thesis. Teaching combines theory with practice through modelling work, case studies, group work and projects.

The programme has three study paths: Water Resources Management and Environmental Hydraulics, Water and Wastewater Engineering, and Water and Development. Students take courses from at least two study paths. Aalto says the programme is a foundation for doctoral studies and prepares students for international work, including within the United Nations system.
